The Metal Tube Keeps Wearing Through The Rubber Foot, How Can I Fix This?

Standard

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIf you find that the metal tube is cutting through the rubber foot there are several ways to fix this on the Manfrotto tripods.

First, check your load.  Extreme wear of the feet could be that you are over loading the tripod, or unnecessarily dragging it across the ground.  Ove loading a light weight tripod will increase vibration through “resonance” and will not allow the camera to stabilize.  Actually amplifimng vibrations, or not allowing them to disapate correctly.

Second, your tripod may be old enough that it just needs a little work. A tune up, if you will.  Over the years, key points can wear out.  the feet will need to be replaced, the lock knobs or handles may need adjusting, the carter column and head cleaned and adjusted.

Third, the simple fix is to put a dime, penny or nickel (these are the fastest fix) inside the foot for the tube to rest on. this will prevent the metal tube from cutting the rubber. Some tripods like 190 and 055 can be retro fitted with rubber/spike feet.

Removable spike feet for Manfrotto tripods

These are easily attached to the bottom of the leg tube with the provided tool.  There is a metal spike that hides inside a retractable solid rubber foot (Click here more info).

The spikes are useful on slick mossy rocks, snow, ice and other surfaces that the rubber foot does not provide the traction that you would want.  Or, you drew down the rubber feet and never use the spike, but allow the durable solid rubber foot to do years and years of work without wearing out.

Generally speaking, we have few problems with these feet.  Obviously, mud and sand will clog the threads, but a good rinsing with the hose will clean that out.  The only problems we’ve seen is because of repeated use in salt water WITHOUT washing off later.

Yes, we do recommend you wash your tripod from time to time.  Care and up keep will always make your equipment last longer.  Rinse everything down, quickly dry it off with a towel or t-shirt like material, and don’t use strong detergents or de greasers.  These will remove the fine lubricants that are on key points on the head and tripod clamps.  This will also allow you to inspect the tripod to see if it needs any spare parts.

Manfrotto X Pro 3-Way Head

Standard

Manfrotto_3way_product_overview_closedThe MHX Pro 3 Way Head.  This is the first pan head in the New Manfrotto XPRO head series.

This head is designed for the photographer who wants the maximum in precision with a compact size.

For any photographer, precision is the key.  This is why a three way head is ideal when making precise adjustments.  This new Manfrotto XPRO 3 way head is no different, but actually is is, very different from other 3 way head on the market.  Lets see what these new and different features are:

  1. Compact design.  Who doesn’t love the convenience of a smaller lighter head to carry around.  Especially when hiking or walking a lot, every ounce may as well be a pound when you have to carry it for hours.  Take the head off your tripod and stick it in you camera bag.  This is a compact head with retractable handles that allow you to adjust them to your needs. The head will easily accommodate about 8.8 pounds of gear. Easily enough weight load for a loaded DSLR camera or a mini DV type camera. The pan bar is adjustable and easily removed, with a standard tooth and gear setting system for controlling pan bar position.
  2. Manfrotto_3way_product_overview_openFriction Control.  The dual friction control allows for any photographer to minutely adjust the level of friction in the panning and tilting to adjust for the weight of almost any lens.Like the XPRO 3 way pan head, this new video head has the tension adjustment on the tilt movements. You can switch between hard or soft fluidity. Hard for the slow tilt movements and soft for a faster movement with less drag. Tension controls are separate from locks so you can set the camera and leave it, even though you are locking and unlocking the pan or tilt controls. Unlike the XPRO 3 way head, this is designed for video. Internally this is a video head, using fluid discs fro true smooth fluid movements.
  3. Fast. It uses the 200PL quick release plate that is the most common plate used by still photographers. The quick releases are small and usually are hidden under the camera, out of the way. Making for rapid changes from a Manfrotto still head to the video head without having to change plates. While this is not the primary reason to buy this head, it is a huge timesaver when you are working cross platform/cross genre and still using your still tripod.

True to Manfrotto legacy, the parts are interchangeable and self repair of lost knobs or screws is possible, once parts become available in this country. This is not to demean this head though. I expect mine to last many years, and over that time I expect it to need a knob or if I loose the pan handle, it is easily replaceable; unlike many lesser, cheaper maintained brands. See the parts we already stock.

The price is very affordable and reasonable at $149.99. As I did research on the competitors I found it to be in the middle of the price range, but in my opinion it should last longer because it is well made and long history Manfrotto has for making parts available for long periods of time.
