The MHX Pro 3 Way Head. This is the first pan head in the New Manfrotto XPRO head series.
This head is designed for the photographer who wants the maximum in precision with a compact size.
For any photographer, precision is the key. This is why a three way head is ideal when making precise adjustments. This new Manfrotto XPRO 3 way head is no different, but actually is is, very different from other 3 way head on the market. Lets see what these new and different features are:
- Compact design. Who doesn’t love the convenience of a smaller lighter head to carry around. Especially when hiking or walking a lot, every ounce may as well be a pound when you have to carry it for hours. Take the head off your tripod and stick it in you camera bag. This is a compact head with retractable handles that allow you to adjust them to your needs. The head will easily accommodate about 8.8 pounds of gear. Easily enough weight load for a loaded DSLR camera or a mini DV type camera. The pan bar is adjustable and easily removed, with a standard tooth and gear setting system for controlling pan bar position.
- Friction Control. The dual friction control allows for any photographer to minutely adjust the level of friction in the panning and tilting to adjust for the weight of almost any lens.Like the XPRO 3 way pan head, this new video head has the tension adjustment on the tilt movements. You can switch between hard or soft fluidity. Hard for the slow tilt movements and soft for a faster movement with less drag. Tension controls are separate from locks so you can set the camera and leave it, even though you are locking and unlocking the pan or tilt controls. Unlike the XPRO 3 way head, this is designed for video. Internally this is a video head, using fluid discs fro true smooth fluid movements.
- Fast. It uses the 200PL quick release plate that is the most common plate used by still photographers. The quick releases are small and usually are hidden under the camera, out of the way. Making for rapid changes from a Manfrotto still head to the video head without having to change plates. While this is not the primary reason to buy this head, it is a huge timesaver when you are working cross platform/cross genre and still using your still tripod.
True to Manfrotto legacy, the parts are interchangeable and self repair of lost knobs or screws is possible, once parts become available in this country. This is not to demean this head though. I expect mine to last many years, and over that time I expect it to need a knob or if I loose the pan handle, it is easily replaceable; unlike many lesser, cheaper maintained brands. See the parts we already stock.
The price is very affordable and reasonable at $149.99. As I did research on the competitors I found it to be in the middle of the price range, but in my opinion it should last longer because it is well made and long history Manfrotto has for making parts available for long periods of time.
