The variety of Manfrotto pan bars

There are quite a few different pan bars for Manfrotto video heads. Some like the first four in the picture below are simple.  A pan bar that fits into a clamp on the head, or a clamp already attached to the pan bar.  Many of the longer video pan handles are sectioned, or telescoped like the one on the lower right.  Those that telescope in and out are adjusted by the clamp in the middle, then they fit into a clamp on the head.  Really just a double of screws and a knob hold it all together.

Other pan handles are sectioned.  The sections are held together with a parallel clamp.  The clam is two bars with two screws that press parallel to each other inside the pan bar.  If any of the part are lost, then you will have to replace the bar clamp.  If all the pieces are intact, just tighten the screws until you have enough tension to hold everything together.  Remember more tension is not better.  Over tightening the screws may deform the handle, rendering it next to useless.

Check the clamps where they attach to the head for wear.  Both on the clamp and on the head are interlocking teeth that maintain the position of the handle when set and tightened.  Not tightening these enough will allow them to move too much and wear both out.  Once the teeth on the head are worn away then it is a major repair to fix.  The pan bar just needs a new clamp.  This page will have a listing of all the pan bars that we support.
